How it's worked out

The App Store part reads Apple's public app page (rating, the stars and the reviews it shows) and asks Apple's lookup for the app in 19 big App Stores, since ratings are kept per country. The Google Play part reads Google's public app page: rating, number of reviews, downloads, last update and the reviews it shows.

"Going well" is a review with 4 or 5 stars, "Needs you" one with 1 to 3, newest first.

Questions

Where do the numbers come from?

From the App Store's and Google Play's own public pages, asked the moment you paste the link and kept for 6 hours. Nothing about the app's makers or its users is needed.

Why don't I see every review?

The store pages only show a few: the App Store shows its most helpful reviews and Google Play a handful. To see each new review as it lands, from every country, connect your app to Apparent; it reads them through App Store Connect and the Google Play Console.

Can I check a competitor's app?

Yes. Any app that's live in the store works, yours or anyone else's.

Why is the rating different in each country?

Apple keeps ratings per country. An app can have 4.8 in Germany and 3.9 in the US; the list shows the countries where it has the most ratings, out of 19 big App Stores.
