App retention calculator
How many new people come back to your app? Put in how many started and how many returned after a day, a week and a month, and read it in plain words.
3 in 10 new people came back the next day, and 1 in 17 were still coming back a month later.
Day 1 retention 30%, day 7 12%, day 30 6%.
Apparent works these out from your real numbers, for every app, and says them in plain words. See the live demo.
How it's worked out
Each line is the people who came back on that day divided by everyone who started. "3 in 10" is 30%, rounded to the nearest tenth so it's easy to picture; small shares are said as "1 in 40".
Questions
What is day 1 retention?
The share of people who came back the day after they first opened your app. If 1,000 people started on Monday and 300 opened the app again on Tuesday, day 1 retention is 30%: 3 in 10.
How is day 7 and day 30 retention worked out?
The same way: people who came back 7 or 30 days after they started, divided by everyone who started that day. Some tools count only people who came back on exactly that day, others on that day or later; the second gives bigger numbers.
Where do I find these numbers?
In your app's own analytics, because the app has to see each person come back. The stores don't report it per person.
