App not responding (ANR)

An ANR (app not responding) is when an Android app freezes long enough that the system offers to close it.

Also called ANR, ANR rate.

In plain words

Fern froze for 7 people on Android this week, mostly on older phones.

How Apparent would say it about Fern, an example app in the live demo.

Good to know

Android shows the "isn't responding" message when the app doesn't react to a tap for about five seconds, usually because slow work is running where the screen is drawn.

Google Play counts ANRs in Android vitals. If more than 0.47% of daily users hit one, Google treats it as bad behaviour and can show the app less.

To people, a freeze feels like a crash, so read the two together.

Where the number comes from

Google Play Console (Android vitals).
