Cohort

A cohort is a group of people who started using your app at the same time, followed together to see how they behave.

Also called Cohort analysis.

In plain words

Of the people who found Fern in the first week of October, 1 in 8 were still using it four weeks later.

How Apparent would say it about Fern, an example app in the live demo.

Good to know

Averages mix old and new people together. Cohorts keep them apart, so you can see whether people who arrived after your latest update stay longer than those who came before it.

The usual cohort is the week or month someone first opened the app. You can also group by where they came from, which country they're in, or which version they started on.

Cohort charts are often shown as a triangle of percentages. They're precise and hard to read. A sentence like the one above says the same thing for the cohort you care about.
